BS 1090

Ensure conformity and safety in the fabrication and assembly of steel and aluminium components and structures.

BS EN 1090 focuses on structural integrity, fabrication control, and legal compliance for steel and aluminium structures, and is centred around:

  • Factory Production Control (FPC)
  • Welding coordination and competence
  • Material traceability
  • Inspection and testing
  • Execution Classes (EXC1–EXC4)
  • Compliance with CE/UKCA marking requirements
  • Documented procedures and technical standards

BS EN 1090 is a legal requirement for placing structural components on the UK or EU market. Once a compliant Factory Production Control system is in place, you can build on this foundation and adopt additional standards such as ISO 9001.

    BS 1090 FAQs

    Who needs BS 1090 certification?

Any business manufacturing load-bearing steel or aluminium structures.

Is BS 1090 a legal requirement?

Yes. BS 1090 is required under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR).

    What are Execution Classes (EXC)?

Execution Classes (EXC) define the level of control, quality assurance, and technical requirements needed when manufacturing structural steel or aluminium under BS EN 1090. They ensure that the fabrication, welding, inspection, and documentation match the risk and complexity of the structure being built. There are four Execution Classes, each increasing in technical demand, from EXC1 (simple structures) to EXC4 (complex, high-risk structures).

    What does certification involve?

Certification proves your organisation runs safely, consistently, and with full traceability, covering your FPC, welding control, material tracking, and compliance with technical standards.

    How long does certification take?

This will depend on whether you are already prepared or starting from scratch, but can take as little as four to eight weeks. If you already have ISO 9001, the process could be faster. A gap analysis will give you a more accurate idea of timescales.

Do I need a Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC)?

Yes. A Responsible Welding Coordinator is required for compliance. You can employ an internal RWC or hire external RWC services depending on the needs of your business.

    What documentation is required?

Welding procedures, material certificates, inspection records, and FPC documentation. Our consultants can help you organise these and put systems in place to make paperwork more efficient.

Does BS 1090 apply to small fabrication shops?

Yes. If you produce structural components, you need BS 1090 certification.

Can you help us prepare for the audit?

Yes. We help with every stage, including gap analysis, documentation, welding support, and audit preparation.

    How do we get started?

We start with a quick call to understand your goals, current position, and the standards that best fit your business, and then we go from there. No long-winded process. No sales pitches. Just a friendly chat to find out how we can help.
